The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides Books in Order

If Brides with Grit is the foundation and Grooms with Honor is the next generation of men, then The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides is where Linda K Hubalek lets Clear Creek cut loose a little. The series is set in 1892, when the daughters from the earlier books are grown, opinionated, and not especially interested in having their futures arranged for them.

Unfortunately for them, the older church women in town have other ideas.

The spark for the whole series is the Peashooter Society, a group of well-meaning, meddlesome women who decide Clear Creek has too many unattached young women and not enough men. Their solution is gloriously overconfident. They recruit a group of prospective grooms, promise them jobs and housing, and more or less plan out who should marry whom before anyone involved has much say in it.

Of course it does not go smoothly. That is the whole charm of the series. The women the Peashooters think they are matching do not necessarily want the men assigned to them. The men arrive with their own hopes, histories, and loyalties. Pairings get reshuffled, friendships deepen into love, and the town has to watch its neat little plan come apart in a much more human way.

A lot of these books carry a lighter, more comic energy than Hubalek's earlier series, but they are not just capers. The characters still have real concerns. Some of the men come out of army service or orphan-train histories. The women are trying to choose work, love, and stability on their own terms. Children, siblings, shops, hotel jobs, medical work, and everyday town life all matter. Hubalek keeps the stakes emotional even when the setup is playful.

Because this series grows straight out of earlier Clear Creek books, longtime readers get a payoff from seeing babies and children from Brides with Grit grow into heroines here. But newcomers can still enjoy the basic hook, which is simple and effective: somebody else made the match, and now the people involved have to decide whether they agree.

The result is sweet historical romance with community bustle, crossed courtships, and plenty of family interference. If you like connected series where old characters reappear, where humor sits beside sincerity, and where love rarely goes according to plan, The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides is one of Hubalek's most openly fun series.
