Author bio
Linda K Hubalek was born in Lindsborg, Kansas, and grew up on the prairie landscape that would later shape nearly all of her fiction. Her books return again and again to central Kansas, Swedish immigrant roots, hard farm work, and the women and men who tried to build decent lives in open country.
That landscape never really left her.
As a girl, she wanted to be a farmer. She has said that a sixth grade paper about what she wanted to be when she grew up pointed in that direction, even if she thought at the time that girls were not supposed to say that out loud. She went on to study Agriculture and Horticulture at Kansas State University, then worked in agronomy research before starting her own wholesale horticulture business, Prairie Flower Creations. She grew and dried flowers, ornamental corn, and mini pumpkins for the florist trade, which tells you a lot about the practical, seasonal world she came from.
Then life shifted. In 1990, just as her business had gained attention, her husband's job moved the family to California. Hubalek sold the business and found herself badly homesick for Kansas, for family, and for farmland. She has written about trying to cope by growing flowers and pumpkins in five gallon buckets on a cement lawn. Out of that homesickness came writing.
Her first book, Butter in the Well, appeared in 1992. It grew from research into the Swedish woman who homesteaded the farm where Hubalek herself had grown up. That book, and the later Prarieblomman and Looking Back, turned prairie history into something close and personal by focusing on everyday work, weather, loss, faith, and family memory.
She kept going.
Hubalek later built out more ancestor-based historical series, including Trail of Thread, about a family's wagon journey to Kansas and the violence of Bleeding Kansas, and Planting Dreams, which follows Charlotta Johnson from drought-stricken Sweden to a homestead on the Great Plains. These books are rooted in research, but they read like stories about real kitchens, real chores, and real people trying to get through another winter.
Then she changed lanes and began writing sweet historical western romance. Series like Brides with Grit, Grooms with Honor, and The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides take readers to fictional Clear Creek and the ranch country around Ellsworth, Kansas. The appeal is easy to see. The books have strong women, honorable men, linked families, a little danger, and a lot of community. Readers who like connected casts and frontier settings usually find plenty to settle into there.
Her work life has stayed close to the land too. Hubalek and her husband eventually moved back to Kansas, bought land next to her family, and raised bison for a decade. That return to prairie life feels of a piece with the books. She did not just imagine the pull of the land, she lived it.
These days, she still writes from Kansas. When she is not working on books, she has said she is usually reading, gardening, or traveling with her husband, often with dark chocolate nearby. That sounds about right for a writer whose stories are full of steady work, family ties, and small comforts earned the hard way.
