The Magpie Society Books in Order

The Magpie Society is a two-book young adult mystery series by Amy McCulloch and Zoe Sugg. It takes place at Illumen Hall, a prestigious British boarding school where tradition, reputation, and old rituals shape everyday life. Beneath that polished surface, though, the school is hiding a web of private loyalties and dangerous secrets.

The story begins with One for Sorrow. Audrey arrives at Illumen Hall from America and finds herself sharing a room with Ivy, a capable but distant prefect. Their uneasy first days are overshadowed by the recent death of Lola Radcliffe, a student found on the beach with a magpie tattoo on her back. Then a mysterious podcast claims to know who killed Lola and warns that one of the girls may be next.

Neither Audrey nor Ivy has an easy reason to trust the other.

Audrey is an outsider trying to understand a school with its own strange rules. Ivy is grieving Lola and wants to keep her own life under control. Their different views make them useful investigators, even when they clash. The alternating narration lets readers follow both girls as they compare stories, test assumptions, and discover that Illumen Hall has been keeping more than one secret.

The Magpie Society itself is the series' central shadow. Few students appear to know much about it, yet its symbols and messages keep surfacing around the school. Magpies become more than a decoration or superstition. They signal a hidden structure that reaches into the school's past and shapes the danger facing Audrey and Ivy in the present.

Two for Joy continues directly from the first book. While the girls pursue justice for Lola, another friend disappears in suspicious circumstances. A card left by the Magpie Society gives them a lead, but it also makes clear that somebody is still setting the terms of the game. The mystery becomes a race against time, with the girls forced to look more closely at the school's traditions and at the people they thought they understood.
