Series background & context

The MacLerie Clan is Terri Brisbin's long-running medieval Scottish romance series. At its center is a powerful Highland clan, but the stories are less about one continuous plot than about the marriages, rivalries, old hurts, and family duties that shape the people connected to it.

The best place to begin is Taming the Highlander. Connor MacLerie needs a wife, and Jocelyn becomes part of an arrangement that neither of them expects to become personal. The book establishes a pattern that runs through the series: a practical bargain puts two people together, then clan politics and old loyalties make a simple happy ending impossible.

A clan remembers everything.

Books such as Surrender to the Highlander and Possessed by the Highlander expand the world through new couples whose private decisions have public consequences. The series includes warriors, chieftains, widows, women with secrets, and people forced into uneasy proximity by travel, hostage situations, or marriage plans. The emotional conflict is often tied directly to the question of who can be trusted when family interests are at stake.

The later books bring in younger generations and related families. Taming the Highland Rogue, The Highlander's Stolen Touch, At the Highlander's Mercy, The Highlander's Dangerous Temptation, and Yield to the Highlander each explore another corner of the clan network. Some characters are captured by old promises, while others have to face the cost of the choices they made years before.

The series also crosses over with A Highland Feuding in The Highlander's Inconvenient Bride. That story joins a MacLerie woman to a Cameron heir in a marriage meant to strengthen an alliance. Her Highlander for One Night continues the broader family web, while The Earl's Secret and Blame It On the Mistletoe visit related stories set many generations later.

These books run on loyalty and longing.

Expect rugged Highland settings, travel between keeps, clan negotiations, and relationships that develop under pressure. The stakes can include land, peace, reputation, and the safety of a whole household, but the series keeps returning to the smaller question underneath: can these two people tell each other the truth?

Start at Taming the Highlander if you want to follow the clan from the beginning. Individual books can work as romances on their own, but reading in order gives the best sense of the MacLerie family's changing history and the long shadow of its earlier choices.
