Series background & context
The Lost Daughters series blends modern family drama with historical romance, linking each book to a single place in London: Hope’s House, a home for unmarried mothers whose babies were adopted out decades ago. In the present, different women are called to a lawyer’s office and handed a box left for them by the home, each containing small clues to a past they barely knew existed.
Every novel follows one of those women as she tries to make sense of what she has been given. A faded recipe card and a theatre program send Lily to Italy in The Italian Daughter, where she takes a job on a vineyard by Lake Como and uncovers the story of Estée, a young performer in the 1940s who fell deeply in love with Felix, the baker’s son, only to be torn away by family duty and war.
In The Cuban Daughter, Claudia discovers an old crest tied to the powerful Diaz family and travels to Havana. There, with the help of chef Mateo and an abandoned family home locked in the past, she pieces together the fate of Esmeralda, a sugar baron’s daughter whose forbidden romance unfolded against the backdrop of revolution in 1950s Cuba.
Subsequent books carry the idea further afield. The Royal Daughter leads Ella to the Greek island of Skopelos and a royal family forced into exile, while The Sapphire Daughter takes Georgia to Lake Geneva to learn why a priceless tiara was broken apart and how a princess named Delphine chose between duty and the man she loved.
The Paris Daughter follows designer Blake to wartime Paris as she traces the work and heartbreak of fashion talent Evelina. The Spanish Daughter moves between a lavish Argentinian estate and modern day Argentina as Rose seeks the truth behind a hard choice her ancestor Valentina once made. In The Hidden Daughter, Charlotte returns to Norway and to her great grandmother Amalie, whose hidden ring and wartime sacrifices reshape everything Charlotte thought she knew about her family.
Planned as the final piece of the puzzle, The Last Daughter draws the threads together by turning to Mia, the woman who has spent years reuniting Hope’s House boxes with their owners. At last she opens the final box and follows a trail back to Hope herself, the young woman whose courage, heartbreak and determination to help other mothers began the whole story.
Across the series, Lane’s focus is on how secrets echo down generations. Each dual timeline novel offers a lush sense of place, from vineyards and island harbours to grand hotels and couture salons, while never losing sight of the very human costs of shame, separation and sacrifice. The modern heroines arrive searching for answers, and leave with a deeper understanding of where they came from and what kind of life and love they want to claim for themselves.
You can read The Lost Daughters in order to see the larger pattern unfold, or dip into any volume as a standalone. Either way, you will find tangled family histories, big romantic gestures and the reassuring sense that, even after decades, some bonds can still be repaired.
