Author bio
Soraya M Lane grew up devouring stories and quietly planning to write her own. For a while, though, it looked as if her future lay in a courtroom rather than on the page. She earned a law degree and started down a conventional career path, only to realise that the work that really lit her up was happening in the margins, in the scenes and characters she was sketching whenever she had a spare moment.
While she was still studying, she joined local writing groups and began learning the craft of popular fiction. Romance felt like a natural home, with its focus on emotion, connection and hope. After years of writing around study and work, and sending off manuscripts between lectures and late nights, she sold her first novel and began publishing contemporary romances with Harlequin and other publishers.
Those early books introduced readers to the kind of stories she still loves to tell in that genre: small towns, big feelings and everyday people figuring out who they are and who they love. Series like Heroes Come Home, Montana, Texas Kings and River Ranch follow returning soldiers, stubborn cowboys and the women who keep them honest, mixing family drama, community ties and slow earned trust.
Over time, Soraya found herself drawn more and more to the untold stories sitting just behind the headlines of the Second World War. She went back to study writing in more depth and began researching the women whose courage often went unrecorded, from nurses and pilots to resistance fighters and journalists. That work led to her first historical novels, including Voyage of the Heart, about war brides crossing the Atlantic to new lives and uncertain marriages.
Her historical fiction has since grown into a rich body of work. Novels like Wives of War, Hearts of Resistance, The Spitfire Girls, The Girls of Pearl Harbor and The Last Correspondent follow groups of women thrown together by war, doing dangerous jobs under impossible pressure. Readers come for the high stakes and historical detail, but they stay for the friendships, small acts of bravery and quiet moments of love that run through every book.
More recently, Soraya has combined her love of sweeping history with the intimacy of family drama in her dual timeline Lost Daughters series, beginning with The Italian Daughter. Each novel sends a modern woman searching through letters, recipes and heirlooms for the truth about a grandmother or great grandmother, unearthing hidden romances and long buried secrets in Italy, Cuba, Greece, Switzerland, Paris, Norway and beyond.
Alongside the wartime sagas, she continues to write contemporary women’s fiction and romance. Books such as Letters to Love and Always and Forever lean into grief, resilience and second chances in modern settings, while stories like The Secret Midwife, The London Girls, The Berlin Sisters, The Pianist’s Wife and The Secret Librarian return to the tension and courage of occupied Europe.
Soraya now writes full time from a small farm in her native New Zealand, where she lives with her husband, their two sons and a collection of much loved animals. Her office window looks out over a paddock where the family’s horses graze, and that view often finds its way into her cowboy romances and rural settings.
Most weekdays you will find her walking after school drop off, then settling in at her desk with a mug of coffee and a fresh set of pages to draft. She describes writing as the best job in the world and still sounds a little delighted that this is what she gets to do. Whether she is deep in a World War II archive or imagining a small town rodeo, her aim is the same: tell an emotional story that feels human and hopeful, and leave readers with characters they will miss when they turn the last page.
