Series background & context
The Lords of Bucknall Club is a Regency-era queer romance series written by J.A. Rock with Lisa Henry. Its version of Regency society is knowingly playful. The gowns, balls, titles, manners, and marriage pressure are all here, but so are men who can pursue love more openly than they could in real history.
The books follow a connected group of aristocrats, outsiders, and working people whose lives overlap around the exclusive Bucknall Club. Each installment gives a different couple the center of the stage, while familiar faces keep appearing with advice, gossip, chaos, and, occasionally, actual help.
Expect courtship with sharp elbows.
A Husband for Hartwell begins with Lord William Hartwell, whose expected match to his childhood friend leaves him feeling trapped. A Case for Christmas shifts toward a mystery involving Lord Christmas Gale, while A Rival for Rivingdon turns two fashionable young men, Loftus Rivingdon and Morgan Notley, into rivals for the same eligible viscount. Their feud becomes increasingly hard to separate from attraction.
Later books bring a little more weight alongside the comedy. A Sanctuary for Soulden follows a grieving viscount and a doctor whose work puts him at odds with polite society. An Affair for Aumont centers on a French marquis carrying old grief and a principled Bow Street Runner. A Scandal for Stratford closes the series with Lord James Stratford and his longtime stablemaster, Harold Granger, facing trouble that reaches beyond their private arrangement.
There are jokes, schemes, and terrible plans.
The ongoing thread is less a single mystery than a growing found family. The characters learn that status, money, and a polished public image do not make a safe life. They have to choose honesty, loyalty, and the people who show up for them when things go wrong.
The tone is breezy and romantic, with farcical complications beside serious concerns about war, grief, family cruelty, class, and reputation. The novels work as individual love stories, but reading in order makes the recurring friendships, old grudges, and running jokes land more fully. Start with A Husband for Hartwell to watch the wider Bucknall circle take shape.
