Author bio
J.A. Rock writes LGBTQ+ romance, suspense, horror, and speculative fiction, often with characters who are trying to build a life after a mess, a mistake, or a hard loss. The books range from funny contemporary romances to darker stories about isolation, grief, loyalty, and survival.
Rock has written more than thirty novels, both solo and with frequent collaborator Lisa Henry. Their shared books include the college romances Mark Cooper Versus America and Brandon Mills versus the V-Card, the crime-romance trilogy that begins with The Two Gentlemen of Altona, and the Regency-set Lords of Bucknall Club novels.
The work moves around.
Readers looking for a sharp, funny entry point may start with The Subs Club. It follows a close group of submissive friends who form a club after a preventable tragedy shakes their community. The series makes room for banter, unusual relationship dynamics, grief, and the practical work of learning how to trust people again.
Rock also writes stories that take a stranger turn. In The Silvers, a human mission encounters an alien people whose way of feeling and understanding the world challenges everything the visitors assume. The Grand Ballast imagines a future built around extreme live entertainment, following a dancer caught in a controlling relationship. Minotaur takes myth, monsters, and a girls' home and turns them into a dark coming-of-age fantasy.
The romances tend to put people under pressure, then pay attention to what they do next.
That can mean an anxious college student learning to let someone close, as in the Boy books. It can mean a federal agent and a slippery con man trying to stay alive long enough to solve a crime, as in Playing the Fool. It can also mean historical characters facing class rules, family expectations, war, and desire in the Lords of Bucknall Club series.
Rock studied theatre and creative writing, a useful combination for books with lively dialogue and characters who often perform a version of themselves before they are ready to be honest. Rock has also described becoming a co-writer with Lisa Henry after taking a nervous chance and sending the email that started their long-running partnership.
That collaboration stuck.
Outside fiction, Rock narrates audiobooks under the name Jill Smith. The work has received Lambda Literary, EPIC, and INDIE Award nominations. The Subs Club received the 2016 National Leather Association-International Pauline Reage Novel Award, and 24/7 was named among the best books of 2016 by Kirkus Reviews.
Rock lives in the West Virginia wilds, collects antique clothing, and shares life with an extremely judgmental dog. Those small details fit the books well: the stories can be unruly, intimate, funny, and a little off-center, but they never lose interest in the people trying to find their way through them.
