Series background & context

The Last Survivors is a near-future military thriller series by Declan Finn and Allan Yoskowitz. It takes place after a small nuclear war has left large parts of the world ruined and made everyday life far less secure.

The lead character is Kevin Anderson, an intelligence operative with a formidable background and a talent for making enemies. In Codename: Winterborn, he and his team are sent to locate the nuclear arsenal of the Islamic Republic of France. The mission goes wrong when the political people who sent them decide their lives are expendable.

Kevin's response is not quiet.

The first book follows his attempt to strike back against the people responsible before another team is sacrificed. It is a revenge story, but also a story about the cost of being used by institutions that claim to serve a greater good. Kevin has limited resources, enemies on every side, and no reason to assume help is coming.

In Codename: UnSub, Kevin is living in San Francisco in 2094, a city where the old systems of law and order have broken down. He has become a protector of Chinatown, but a murder threatens his position and points to a killer unlike the dangers he has faced before. With no modern forensic safety net, he has to work the case through instinct, contacts, and persistence.

The atmosphere is grim, fast, and openly political. These books are interested in the practical aftermath of disaster, including broken infrastructure, armed factions, and people trying to make a safe corner for themselves. At the same time, Kevin's story keeps the series focused. He may be exceptionally trained, but the plot keeps asking what happens when a man built for war has nowhere stable to put his loyalty.

Read the two novels in publication order: Codename: Winterborn first, followed by Codename: UnSub. They form one continuing story about Kevin's survival, the people he protects, and the threats that keep reaching into his damaged world.
