The Woodsman

by Dr Rebecca Sharp

2022

Violet Royale’s life implodes in a matter of weeks, so she escapes to a rented Maine cabin for a quiet holiday breakdown. Instead she finds rugged woodsman Jamie Kinkade claiming the place is his and a blizzard trapping them together. Snowed in with nowhere to run, Violet discovers that the grumpy stranger might be exactly the refuge she needs.

Series background & context

The Kinkades series is built around a big, boisterous family in a small Maine town where the off-season is just as interesting as tourist season. Each book focuses on a different Kinkade sibling, pairing them with outsiders who arrive with baggage of their own. Wooded cabins, storm-season coastlines, and family gatherings provide the backdrop for stories that mix humor, hurt, and holiday magic.

The series opens with The Woodsman, where Violet Royale’s life has gone completely off the rails. A cheating ex and a derailed career leave her one bad day away from shaving her head and disappearing. Instead, she rents what she thinks is a quiet cottage in Maine for the holidays, only to have a gruff, flannel-wearing stranger barge in and insist it is his home. Jamie Kinkade has carefully crafted a simple life around his woodworking business and his tight-knit family. Being stranded in a blizzard with a gorgeous, half-dressed stranger is not part of his plan.

As the books continue, other Kinkades step into the spotlight. The Lightkeeper brings in a sibling tied to the town’s lighthouse and the woman whose arrival disrupts his carefully ordered routines. The Candlemaker follows Frankie Kinkade, whose candle business and penchant for meddling in other people’s love lives collide with a corporate outsider determined to sell a historic inn. The Innkeeper gives center stage to Lou, who is desperately trying to keep the family inn running while fending off matchmaking siblings, only to end up fake-dating a Hollywood actor after a very public tumble down the inn’s stairs.

What ties the series together is the sense of family as both safety net and chaos engine. The Kinkades show up for one another with teasing, unsolicited advice, and serious backup when it counts. Newcomers to town are folded into that orbit whether they like it or not, forced to confront their own ideas about solitude, success, and what a home should look like. The Maine setting, with its snowstorms, rocky coast, and cozy businesses, adds to the feeling that this is a place where you can fall apart and put yourself back together.

If you enjoy ensemble casts, seasonal settings, and romances where the extended family is very much in the mix, The Kinkades offers that in spades, wrapped around slow-burn chemistry and satisfying happily-ever-afters.
