The Artist's Touch

by Dr Rebecca Sharp

2017

Tristan Black, founder of the secretive Gentlemen’s Guild, is furious when a priceless sketch of his mother is sold without his consent. To reclaim it, he must paint heiress Elsa Carter, the buyer’s daughter, and use the portrait as leverage. Studying her turns revenge into obsession and forces him to risk the one thing he has always kept off the canvas: his heart.

Series background & context

The Gentlemen’s Guild series lives at the intersection of wealth, anonymity, and art. The Guild is a secretive trio of world-famous artists who prefer the shadows to the spotlight. Each member is a billionaire in his own right, but what truly obsesses them is their craft and the way a woman’s passion can be captured in paint, charcoal, or stone.

In The Artist’s Touch, Tristan Black is the architect of the Guild and the first to have his carefully controlled life upended. A priceless drawing of his mother is sold off without his consent, and the only way to get it back is to agree to a commission he does not want: a portrait of Elsa Carter, the daughter of the man who bought it. Tristan is used to choosing his own subjects and keeping an emotional distance from them. Being forced to study Ellie up close, sketch by sketch, turns into a very different kind of reckoning. Revenge, desire, and the fear of being truly seen all tangle together.

The subsequent books peel back the layers on his fellow Guild members, a sculptor and a painter whose public personas are as carefully curated as their work. Each man has his own specialty and his own set of rules about where art ends and life begins. Each is convinced that he can enjoy a woman’s company for the sake of inspiration without letting it touch the rest of his world. And each is proven wrong.

Across the series, studio doors become thresholds between safety and vulnerability. Glamorous galas, private showings, and sky-high apartments contrast with late nights in paint-splattered clothes, hands stained and hearts on the line. The heroines bring their own ambitions and secrets, refusing to be just muses or temporary distractions. As relationships deepen, the Guild’s code of anonymity and detachment is tested from the inside.

Readers who like romance with a luxe feel, creative professions, and heroes who have to learn that control is not the same thing as strength will find a lot to enjoy here. The Gentlemen’s Guild is ultimately about three men who built a secret society around mastering pleasure and art, only to discover that love is the one thing they cannot manage on their own terms.
