Series background & context

The Breach of Faith series follows Captain James Henry, a disgraced former Coalition officer turned starship captain, as he tries to keep his ship flying and his crew alive in the unstable space between great powers. Henry commands the Shadow Wolf, a worn but capable freighter working the borderlands between the Terran Coalition and the League of Sol, where smugglers, pirates, and intelligence officers all compete for the same secrets.

The story begins with Breach of Peace, when merchant ships start vanishing in neutral space and one mission leaves behind a single survivor. Hired to extract the operative from the planet Lusitania, Henry and his crew find themselves wedged between rival factions, corrupt officials, and League agents who would rather murder a witness than lose an advantage. James is still carrying the weight of his dishonorable dismissal from the Coalition Defense Force, and every choice he makes risks either his hard-won second life or the people depending on him.

In Breach of Faith and Breach of Duty, the stakes climb from one covert extraction to a full-blown fight for a fragile republic. A bombing tears through Lusitania’s parliament, martial law follows, and the League’s influence grows in the confusion. Henry is pushed into building alliances with pirates and privateers, leaning on his old CDF experience to outthink an enemy that prefers subversion over open battle. At the same time he has to confront the lies and compromises that ended his military career, and decide what justice looks like in a galaxy where nobody’s hands are clean.

Breach of Trust forces James to face betrayal on a more personal level when the Shadow Wolf’s first mate is kidnapped as leverage in a larger plot. Rescue means working with people he has every reason to hate, and the mission turns into a test of how far he is willing to go to save one of his own. Loss, grief, and the limits of forgiveness all hit hard as the crew pays for their victories in blood.

Later books continue the arc beyond the original four-novel run. Spacer's Luck and Fortune's Favor move the focus to Admiral James Henry and the fledgling Independent Systems Fleet that grew out of earlier conflicts. Former undercover operative Miri Gaon and the freighter Venture Star shoulder more of the action as they tangle with pirates, warlords, and a dangerously addictive drug called Curall that can topple whole worlds.

In The Iron Dice, the series reaches into full-scale interstellar politics. With the Curall threat checked but not forgotten, Henry is drawn into a crisis involving the Jalm'tar Empire and a usurper who threatens both human nations and alien allies. Old friends return for what may be one last mission, racing to restore the rightful heir and prevent an invasion while both the Terran Coalition and the Independent Systems Federation are stretched thin.

Across the series readers can expect a blend of small-crew space opera and bigger military set pieces. Themes of redemption, loyalty, and faith run through James Henry’s journey, but the books never forget to deliver tense heists, frantic firefights, and the day-to-day banter of a crew who have chosen one another as family. It is a good fit if you like starship captains who have already made their worst mistakes and are trying, against long odds, to make things right.
