Author bio
Daniel Gibbs writes the kind of military science fiction he always loved to read, full of starships, carrier decks, and people trying to do the right thing under fire. His stories share a single, sprawling universe where faith, duty, and the cost of war are never far from the surface.
Long before his first book came out, Gibbs was building that universe in his spare time. He spent years sketching out fleets, timelines, and political crises while holding down a career as a computer engineer. That technical background, plus a lifelong love of classic space opera, gave him the tools to imagine battles that feel grounded in real hardware and chain of command.
For much of his career he supported the US Navy and Marine Corps as an IT engineer. Working alongside service members, even on the civilian side, meant seeing how procedures, personalities, and pressure all collide in a military setting. He brings that experience straight into his fiction, from how orders move through a ship to how people cope when things go badly wrong.
His breakout novel Fight the Good Fight launched the Echoes of War series in 2018. In it, David Cohen gives up his plan to become a rabbi and instead climbs the ranks of the Terran Coalition’s navy while the authoritarian League of Sol presses a brutal war. Readers were drawn to the mix of high-intensity space combat and quiet moments where David wrestles with guilt, grief, and belief.
From there, Gibbs widened the lens. The Breach of Faith books follow former Coalition officer James Henry and the crew of the freighter Shadow Wolf as they work neutral space between the warring powers, trying to make enough money to stay flying while getting dragged into conspiracies and rescue missions. In Breach of Peace and Breach of Duty he leans into the gray areas of intelligence work, smuggling, and political compromise without losing sight of personal redemption.
On another front, Battlegroup Z drops readers into the cockpit with reservist pilot Justin Spencer, who signs up for benefits and finds himself fighting a shooting war instead. Starting with Weapons Free, that series gives a fighter-jock view of the same conflict, full of squadron camaraderie, fear in the minutes before launch, and the nagging question of what all the sacrifice is really for.
Gibbs has continued to grow the universe with series like Deception Fleet, a shadow-war thriller centered on intelligence officer Jackson Adams, and Galaxy Bridge, which follows Colonel Mateo Larra at a wormhole gateway to a new galaxy. In The Lost Warship, beginning with Adrift, he sends the famed Lion of Judah far beyond the Milky Way and asks what happens when a battle-scarred crew has to become explorers and peacekeepers instead of frontline soldiers.
Across all of these series, recurring themes tie the stories together. Characters argue about orders and conscience, wonder what faith looks like in a high-tech future, and try to protect families and strangers alike in wars they did not start. Christians, Jews, and other believers share the same decks and foxholes, not as symbols but as people whose convictions shape their choices.
These days Gibbs spends his time writing new novels, expanding an in-universe encyclopedia, and sharing star maps, ship art, and extras for fans who want to dig deeper. He is open about the fact that he is still learning with every book, and invites readers along as the Terran Coalition, the League of Sol, and a growing cast of allies and enemies push further into his imagined future.
For readers who enjoy series that feel like they are all part of one long campaign, his universe offers plenty of room to explore.
