Series background & context

The Goswell Quartet is a dual-timeline series set in the Cumbrian village of Goswell, where the past keeps pressing into the present. Each book links a modern storyline with an earlier one, often beginning in the Second World War, and the old vicarage is one of the key points of connection.

The first novel introduces Alice, newly married to a village vicar on the eve of war, and Jane, the modern American woman who moves into the same house and starts uncovering Alice's story. That pattern, a hidden note, a family echo, a past life changing a present one, shapes the rest of the quartet as well.

These books are emotional and very readable, with war, family duty, old gardens, lost letters, marriages, and secrets all woven together. Hewitt keeps the history intimate, which makes the discoveries land harder.

If you like time-slip flavored women's fiction without fantasy mechanics, and with plenty of village atmosphere, this quartet is a great place to settle in. Read from The Wife's Promise / The Vicar's Wife onward.
