Series background & context

The Emerald Sisters is a wartime historical series that begins aboard the SS St Louis in 1939. Four Jewish women, Sophie, Rosa, Hannah, and Rachel, become friends while fleeing Nazi Germany, and Sophie breaks her late mother's emerald into four pieces so they can carry a promise of reunion with them.

That promise drives the whole series. Each book follows one woman into a different corner of wartime Europe, tracing survival, resistance, hiding, internment, love, and impossible choices. The books are connected by friendship as much as blood, and by the question of whether these women will ever find one another again.

Hewitt keeps the scale personal. The history is large and frightening, but each novel stays rooted in a woman's daily fear, hope, and determination. The result is emotional rather than military historical fiction, with a strong thread of courage and endurance.

If you like wartime novels built around female friendship and survival, start with The Girl on the Boat and read straight through.
