Author bio

Kate Hewitt was born in Pennsylvania, went to college in Vermont, and spent summers in the Canadian wilderness. That mix of small-town feeling, wide landscapes, and family closeness still runs through a lot of her fiction, whether she is writing village stories, historical sagas, or high-stakes romance.

She started young. Really young.

Hewitt has said she wrote her first story at five, mainly because her older brother had written one and she wanted to do the same. It was only a sentence long, but the habit stuck. Later she studied drama, and after college she moved to New York City planning to build a life in theatre.

Then life changed direction.

She met the man who would become her husband, who also happened to be her brother's childhood friend, and ten days after their wedding they moved to England. Over the years she worked a string of very ordinary jobs, including drama teacher, editorial assistant, secretary, church youth worker, and full-time mother. That lived-in experience shows in her books, which are often full of busy households, strained relationships, practical worries, and people trying to keep going when life gets messy.

Her first professional fiction sale was a short story to The People's Friend when her oldest daughter was one year old. She kept writing, and in 2007 she got the call that launched her Harlequin career with The Italian's Chosen Wife. From there she built a large backlist that moves easily between contemporary romance, women's fiction, and historical fiction.

She also writes as Katharine Swartz.

Readers who pick up Hewitt for the first time usually notice how emotional her stories are. In books like Rainy Day Sisters and the Willoughby Close novels, she writes about villages, sisters, neighbors, and second chances with a warm, grounded touch. In A Mother's Goodbye, The Secrets We Keep, and The Child I Never Had, she leans into painful family choices, especially around motherhood, adoption, fertility, and belonging.

Her historical fiction reaches in a different direction but keeps that same human focus. Novels like The Girl from Berlin, The Edelweiss Sisters, The Angel of Vienna, and The Orphan's Island look at war, exile, courage, and survival through the eyes of women trying to protect the people they love. Even when the backdrop is large, her stories usually stay close to the heart.

Today, Hewitt lives in central New Jersey with her husband, the youngest of her five children still at home, two Golden Retrievers, and a cat. Alongside writing, she works as a Core Editor with Cornerstones Literary Consultancy and offers manuscript assessment for other writers. It feels fitting. Her own career has been built on steady work, emotional honesty, and a real interest in what makes people tick.
