Series background & context

At its core, The Forgotten Empire is a military science fiction series about a human civilization that is larger than Earth, but nowhere near strong enough to feel safe. The seven ancient races of the Confederation dominate a vast region of space and expect everyone else to accept their rules. Humans know the Confederation is out there and try not to provoke it. That plan fails the moment the Confederation decides the Human Empire has become too large, too independent, and too dangerous to leave alone.

The books move between fleet commanders, political leaders, and the people trying to hold the human worlds together while the war is already underway. Admirals such as Derrick Masters, Reynolds, Cleemorl, Collison, and others carry much of the military side, while Layla Starguard becomes important on the political and dynastic side. That mix is a big part of the appeal. This is not just about winning one battle. It is also about deciding what a rebuilt Human Empire is supposed to be.

Earth is only the opening battlefield.

One of the things that gives the series its shape is the idea that human worlds are scattered, partly cut off, and not always in the same position. Earth has the Solar System. The wider Human Empire has older core worlds, vulnerable frontier planets, and former human populations trapped under Confederation control. So the war is always happening on more than one level. One fleet might be holding the line near Earth while another is trying to free occupied worlds, expose a secret inside the Confederation, or convince uneasy alien races to switch sides.

As the books go on, the conflict gets broader and more political. The Confederation begins to crack from the inside. Old alliances weaken. New ones appear. The Morag, Lamothians, Druins, and the mysteries tied to places like Falton Two keep adding fresh pressure to the story. That means the series has a steady sense of escalation without losing its basic direction. Humans are outnumbered, but they keep looking for the next opening.

The tone is clear, direct, and action-first. If you like fleet battles, strategic gambles, and stories where a war can hinge on one bold move in the middle of impossible odds, this series does that well. Start with Banishment and expect a long, steadily widening fight for survival, independence, and control of a very large stretch of space.
