Author bio

Raymond L Weil was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on November 5, 1953, and grew up in Clinton. He studied at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, majoring in math with minors in creative writing and history. Those details fit his fiction pretty well. His books usually pair big scale science fiction ideas with very direct, readable storytelling.

He was a lifelong science fiction and fantasy reader, and he said he owned more than two thousand paperbacks. The space program fascinated him from the beginning, and as a teenager he wanted to be an astronaut. He did not end up flying into space, but that early obsession clearly stayed with him. Again and again, his fiction returns to lunar bases, deep space fleets, ancient ships, and the question of how ordinary people react when the universe suddenly gets much larger.

That dream changed shape, but it never really went away.

By the early 2010s, Weil had started publishing his own novels, beginning with the books that became the Dragon Dreams and Moon Wreck stories. Before long he was building out a whole shelf of connected series, especially military science fiction. Moon Wreck and Alien Contact helped launch his long-running Slaver Wars universe. The Star Cross throws readers into an invasion of Earth and then widens into a much bigger galactic crisis. Invasion and Banishment show another side of his work, the same love of large fleet action, but in tighter, fast-moving series.

Readers who click with Weil usually seem to like the same things. He wrote clear stakes, plenty of combat, ancient-tech mysteries, and human crews who keep going even when the odds are awful. His stories are full of admirals, marines, explorers, and political leaders, but they do not linger too long away from the main problem. Something dangerous is coming, and somebody has to act.

He liked big problems.

Across series such as The Slaver Wars, Galactic Empire Wars, Earth Fall, and The Forgotten Empire, a few patterns keep showing up. There are hidden bases on moons and asteroids, lost civilizations, harsh alien empires, and people trying to rebuild after catastrophe. Even when the canvas gets huge, Dyson spheres, multiverse travel, wars across galaxies, he kept the emotional center simple. Protect the home world. Save as many people as possible. Buy a little more time.

His life away from the page stayed rooted in western Oklahoma. He married Debra Lax in 1974, lived in Clinton, and worked a range of jobs, including time at Collins and Aikman and Bar-S Foods, while also farming. He loved soccer and spent years coaching youth teams before moving into high school coaching. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, reading, and time with his grandchildren. In his own short bio, he mentioned living with his wife and their cat. The picture that comes through is not glamorous. It is steadier than that, a family man from a small town who wrote a lot of space battles.

Weil died on October 22, 2020, at age 66. By then he had published dozens of novels and built a loyal readership across several interlocking series. His daughter, Julie Weil Thomas, also writes, and later books connected to The Forgotten Empire carry that family link forward. For readers who want straightforward space opera with urgency, scale, and no shortage of fleets, his books still make a very easy place to jump in.
