Series background & context

The Ever Chace Chronicles is where Susan Harris really stretches out. It starts like a paranormal murder story, then keeps widening until it becomes something much bigger, full of monsters, gods, soulmates, family bonds, and end-of-the-world stakes.

At the center of it all is Dr. Ever Chace.

Ever grows up human in a world where supernatural creatures are real, public, and impossible to ignore. She is smart, capable, and restless, and when she gets the chance to consult on brutal killings tied to the paranormal world, she takes it. That decision pulls her into the orbit of Derek Doyle, a member of the Paranormal Investigations Team who is used to working alone and trusting very few people. Their connection is immediate, inconvenient, and impossible to treat as background noise.

The early books blend crime investigation with romance. Ever and Derek hunt killers, uncover secrets, and slowly realize that both of them are tied to something older and stranger than either expected. From there the series expands through vampires, Valkyries, curses, mates, gods, prophecies, and battles that reach far beyond one case or one city. Ever is not just solving crimes. She is also learning who she is, what she is becoming, and what that means for the people she loves.

That makes the series feel bigger with every book. Side characters do not stay on the sidelines for long. Caitlyn, Donnie, Erika, Loki, Melanie, Ricky, and others all get room to matter, and the books start to feel like one large found family story as much as a central romance. There is always danger, but there is also a steady sense that these characters belong to each other, even when they are angry, grieving, or making very bad decisions.

It gets emotional fast.

The tone mixes paranormal action with relationship drama and a strong sense of momentum. Harris likes cliffhangers, rising stakes, and revelations that change the shape of the series. Even when the worldbuilding gets bigger, the books stay rooted in love, loyalty, sacrifice, and the question of what people will do for their family, blood or chosen.

If you want a series that starts with supernatural investigations and grows into a full-scale paranormal saga, this is the one. It rewards reading in order, because every new twist builds on old wounds, old promises, and the long road Ever and Derek have to walk before the story finally lets them breathe.
