The EC Archives Books in Order

Daniel Keyes's corner of The EC Archives is less a single continuing saga than a snapshot of his early comics years. These volumes gather the complete runs of Psychoanalysis and Confessions Illustrated, work he did in the mid-1950s before Flowers for Algernon made his name. If you know him mainly as a novelist, this series shows where some of his favorite questions started.

Start with Psychoanalysis if you want the clearest through-line. Its issues follow an unnamed psychiatrist and the people who come to him for help, especially three recurring patients whose fears, family damage, guilt, and buried memories play out over several sessions. The setting is ordinary midcentury America, offices, apartments, streets, living rooms, but the tension is inward. Every revelation is about what people hide from others and from themselves.

It feels half therapy drama, half psychological thriller.

Confessions Illustrated works differently. It belongs to EC's Picto-Fiction line, which mixed prose blocks with richly drawn illustrations instead of using a standard comic-book layout. The stories are short and self-contained, full of illicit romance, jealousy, theft, family strain, and the kind of snap decisions that wreck lives. There is no one hero to follow from issue to issue. The pleasure is in the variety, the mood, and the quick sting each story lands.

These books are pulpy, but they are never empty.

What links them is Keyes's interest in pressure points. Even this early, he kept circling questions about identity, shame, desire, and the way private hurt leaks into public behavior. You can see the same curiosity about the mind that would later drive Flowers for Algernon, The Fifth Sally, and The Minds of Billy Milligan. The art matters too. Between Jack Kamen, Joe Orlando, Johnny Craig, Wally Wood, Marie Severin, and others, the pages have a sharp, moody look that fits the emotional temperature of the stories.

So this is not a series to read for one big cliffhanger or a neatly mapped universe. It works better as an archive of Daniel Keyes learning what kinds of human trouble interested him most. If you like vintage crime, domestic melodrama, and old comics that take psychology seriously, these EC Archives volumes are a fascinating side road into his career.
