Series background & context
The Dragon Kings begins with a simple but very Kimberly Loth setup: a girl meets an arrogant new guy, and the truth is much bigger than high school drama. Aspen thinks Sid is just trouble with a good face. In reality, he is Obsidian, a dragon king with responsibilities, enemies, and a bond to her that neither of them can ignore for long.
From there, the series opens wide.
At its core, this is a paranormal fantasy romance about dragon royalty living across both human and dragon worlds. There are hidden laws, councils, shifting loyalties, magical markings, sealed bonds, rival rulers, and plenty of old family wounds. The books move between intimate relationship tension and much larger power struggles, so you get both the pull of a central romance and the feeling that an entire world is at stake.
The early books stay close to Sid, Aspen, and the people around them, building out the rules of dragon life one reveal at a time. Dragons have colors, hierarchies, duties, and histories that shape everything they do. Love is never just love in this series. It is tied to status, danger, prophecy, and the question of who gets to choose their own future.
As the story goes on, the cast and scope both grow. What starts as Sid and Aspen's story becomes a larger family saga, then a war story, then a multi-arc fantasy series that keeps pulling new characters to the front. Books involving Liam and Isa shift the tone toward castle intrigue, secrets, and assassin-level danger. Later entries move into wizard plots, betrayals, and finally a next-generation arc with Ruby, Pepper, and Hughie trying to carry a wounded dragon world forward.
That long shape is a big part of the appeal. Loth writes this series for readers who like momentum. The books are short, quick, and built to be read one after another. There is always another problem, another magical complication, another character who should probably talk sooner than they do, and another emotional cliff right around the corner.
The settings help keep it lively too. Lakes, mountain caves, castles, hidden territories, and far-flung dragon strongholds all give the series a restless feel. Even when the plot turns inward toward romance or family conflict, the world around the characters stays active and dangerous.
If you want a dragon series that combines fated bonds, royal pressure, hidden magic, and a lot of binge energy, The Dragon Kings is exactly that. It grows from a marked-girl premise into a sprawling supernatural family drama without losing the fast, emotional pull that got it started.
It starts with a tattoo and a dragon king.
It does not stay small for long.
