Series background & context

The Draconis Memoria series takes place in a secondary world on the brink of an industrial age, where steamships, rifles, and corporate empires sit beside ancient ruins and dangerous drakes. At the heart of the setting is drake blood, distilled into potent elixirs that grant rare individuals, the Blood blessed, extraordinary abilities.

For generations the Ironship Trading Syndicate has built its fortunes on this trade, sending hunting crews into wild continents to tap the red, green, blue, and black breeds. Rival nations, especially the authoritarian Corvantine Empire, covet the same resource. When rumours spread that the existing bloodlines are weakening, the balance that keeps the world from open war begins to crumble.

Into this crisis step three very different protagonists. Claydon Torcreek is an unregistered Blood blessed and small time thief pressed into a hazardous expedition to prove or disprove the existence of a legendary white drake. Lizanne Lethridge is Ironship's most formidable covert agent, equally at home in a ballroom or an assassination. Corrick Hilemore is a young, principled naval officer whose pursuit of pirates draws him into conflicts far above his rank.

As the trilogy unfolds, their separate paths crisscross oceans and continents. The white drake proves to be very real, and its awakening stirs an army of warped followers known as the Spoiled. Industrial espionage, revolutions, and full scale battles at sea and on land follow, with drake powered weapons evolving alongside more familiar artillery. The story steadily widens from corporate intrigue to a fight for the survival of human civilisation.

The short prequel "Sandrunners" offers an earlier glimpse of this world, following newly graduated Blood blessed Ethelynne Drystone on a dangerous foray into the Arradsian Interior. It can be read before or after the main books and shows how fragile any expedition becomes once the wild turns against it.

Across all three novels readers can expect a mix of epic fantasy, heist story, and naval adventure. The tone is fast and pulpy but rooted in clear emotional stakes, as Clay, Lizanne, and Hilemore wrestle with loyalty, ambition, and the cost of the powers they wield. Newcomers should start with The Waking Fire to meet the cast and see the first sparks of the coming war.
