The Wolf's Call
by Anthony Ryan
2019
Years after laying down his sword, legendary warrior Vaelin Al Sorna learns that Sherin, the woman he once loved, is caught in the grip of a rising warlord called the Darkblade. To reach her, he must cross the sea and face the Steel Horde.
Series background & context
Raven's Blade picks up Vaelin Al Sorna's story years after the events of the Raven's Shadow trilogy. Once the terror of battlefields and a symbol of the Unified Realm's power, Vaelin has laid down his sword and accepted the lonely title of Tower Lord of the Northern Reaches. He is older, wearier, and determined to live out his days far from courtly intrigue.
Peace, however, has never lasted long around Vaelin. In "The Wolf's Call" news arrives from across the ocean of the Steel Horde, a vast army unified under a man who calls himself the Darkblade and claims the favour of gods. Worse, whispers suggest that Sherin, the healer Vaelin loved and lost, is trapped within this gathering storm. Bound by personal loyalty as much as duty, he sails west to lands ruled by Merchant Kings and unfamiliar customs.
The duology follows Vaelin and a small band of companions as they navigate this foreign continent, its clashing city states, and the terrifying charisma of the Darkblade. Old friends such as Nortah and new figures alike are pulled into a conflict that echoes Vaelin's own legend, forcing him to consider what separates a prophesied hero from a fanatic.
In "The Black Song" the stakes rise further. After a costly defeat, Vaelin's army lies shattered and the Darkblade's forces march unchecked. During the struggle Vaelin regains fragments of the blood song he once lost, and its return is both weapon and warning. The magic that guided his youth now demands sacrifices he may no longer be willing to make.
Raven's Blade continues many of the themes of the earlier trilogy, particularly the tension between faith, destiny, and free will. At the same time it examines what happens to a man who has already lived through one cycle of prophecy and war, only to be asked to do it again. Readers see Vaelin wrestling not only with enemies but with age, regret, and the stories others tell about him.
While the duology provides its own arc, it is best read after Raven's Shadow, when the full weight of Vaelin's history and relationships can land. For those who wanted to know what became of him after Queen of Fire, these books offer a darker, more reflective coda.
