Author bio
Anthony Ryan is a Scottish author of epic fantasy, science fiction, and horror who has built a devoted readership around long, character driven series. He is best known for the stories of Vaelin Al Sorna in the Raven's Shadow and Raven's Blade books, but he has also moved comfortably into industrial fantasy, SF noir, and post apocalyptic thrillers.
He was born in Scotland in 1970 and moved to London as a student, where he studied history with a particular focus on the medieval world. London became home, and for years he balanced a full time career there with late nights and early mornings spent drafting stories.
Before writing took over his life he worked for the British civil service in research and policy roles. Writing was what he did off the clock, slowly building the world that would become the Unified Realm and the Sixth Order. Those early efforts eventually grew into Blood Song, the novel that changed his career.
Ryan first self published Blood Song and watched readers find it through word of mouth. The book's success led to a three book deal with a major publisher and, not long after, the chance to leave the civil service and write full time. He later returned to self publishing alongside traditional deals, describing himself as a hybrid author who likes having a foot in both worlds.
In Raven's Shadow and Raven's Blade he follows Vaelin from a grim childhood in the warrior monastery of the Sixth Order through campaigns, betrayals, and uneasy peace. The books mix hard fought battles with questions about faith, loyalty, and the cost of obedience. They are told on a large canvas but stay rooted in a small circle of friends, rivals, and family who shape Vaelin's life.
With The Draconis Memoria trilogy he shifts to an industrial age setting where corporations hunt drakes for their blood and a handful of people, the Blood blessed, can channel that power. The Seven Swords novellas follow Guyime, a fallen king bound to a demon cursed blade, on a lean, fast moving quest through cursed deserts, kraken haunted ports, and storm lashed kingdoms.
The Covenant of Steel trilogy introduces Alwyn Scribe, an outlaw turned soldier and chronicler whose wry, first person voice carries a story of faith, heresy, and political ambition. In the connected Age of Wrath books Ryan leans into Norse inspired sagas, following warriors, pirates, and scribes as the Sister Queens' realm of Ascarlia faces invasion and the meddling of gods.
Alongside the big fantasies he has always kept a hand in other genres. The Slab City Blues stories are gritty SF noir set in an orbiting slum full of gene spliced criminals and weary detectives. Under the name A. J. Ryan he writes lean horror thrillers such as Red River Seven, and he continues that darker streak in post apocalyptic work like The Feeding.
Ryan still lives in London and writes full time. Away from the desk he has spoken often about his love of history, his interest in science and art, and a long running quest for the perfect pint of real ale. Readers tend to come for the battles and monsters and stay for the way he digs into loyalty, compromise, and the small choices that decide who his characters become.
