Series background & context

Nora Roberts’s The Donovan Legacy centres on a family whose unusual abilities complicate the ordinary business of falling in love. The books on this page follow Morgana, Sebastian and Anastasia Donovan in Captivated, Entranced and Charmed. Their gifts differ, but each relationship raises a similar difficulty: how much can they reveal to someone who may not believe them? The series blends contemporary romance with magic, psychic experience and the responsibilities that come with helping other people.

Captivated begins when screenwriter Nash Kirkland researches witchcraft in Monterey, California. Morgana Donovan is a useful source for his work, but he does not readily accept that her powers are real. Their attraction creates another question for a man who is used to keeping his feelings under control. Morgana has doubts of her own about trusting an ordinary man with an extraordinary part of her life. The romance makes belief personal, because accepting her means more than enjoying her company or borrowing ideas for a script.

The Donovans’ gifts cannot be separated neatly from the people they are.

In Entranced, Sebastian Donovan becomes involved in the search for an abducted child. Private investigator Mary Ellen Sutherland, known as Mel, is sceptical about the psychic assistance he can offer. The need to find the baby forces her to work with him despite those doubts. An undercover role adds another layer to their growing attraction, bringing investigation and courtship into close contact. This part of the series has a stronger suspense element, while keeping trust at the centre of the developing relationship. Sebastian’s abilities may help the case, but they do not remove the difficulty of being believed.

Charmed turns to Anastasia Donovan, an empath and healer whose new neighbour Boone Sawyer is raising a daughter. The possibility of a relationship places her need for privacy beside the impulse to help. When the child’s safety requires her abilities, keeping her secret becomes much harder. The story brings the family’s larger concern into a domestic setting: a gift that can do good may still frighten someone who does not understand it. Anastasia has to consider both the responsibilities of her power and the emotional risk of letting another person see it.

Read Captivated, followed by Entranced and Charmed, to meet the featured Donovans in sequence. Each book has its own central couple and problem, while the family connection creates a shared world of affection and unusual talents. These are paranormal romances focused on relationships rather than an elaborate magical war. The recurring tension comes from the gap between a person’s outwardly ordinary life and the abilities they keep private, with love asking for a kind of openness that the characters cannot take for granted.
