The title may promise rogues, but the real pull is how practical everyone has to be.

No one in these books gets to coast on charm alone.

The novella Night of the Scoundrel rounds out the series with King, one of Bowen's more mysterious recurring figures. His bargain with Adeline Archambault brings revenge, exile, and buried identity to the front, while also tying the book back to the wider network of characters that runs through Bowen's Regency stories.

Overall, The Devils of Dover blends schoolrooms, art studios, country houses, and shadowy routes between London and the coast. The tone is romantic, but it also has war scars, business schemes, smugglers, and women building real work for themselves. These books can be read one by one, yet they reward readers who like connected families, recurring allies, and a little danger mixed into the happy ending.
