Series background & context

The Dark is Christopher Greyson’s foray into post apocalyptic horror, set in a world where technology has abruptly failed. One year before the first book opens, everything with a computer chip died. Power grids collapsed, cars and phones went silent, and the hilltop town of Ridgecrest was cut off from the rest of civilization.

Cain Haight, a former soldier drowning his guilt in alcohol, is an unlikely hero. He has let his life fall apart, but the new world will not let him stay numb. The Dark is not just the absence of light, it is a mysterious and deadly force outside the town, full of creatures and horrors that make venturing out a last resort.

In The Dark 1, Cain begins to understand how bad things have become. Supplies are running low, local power struggles are turning violent, and the rules that once kept people safe no longer apply. When his daughter’s safety is threatened, he is forced out of his stupor and into a journey that will change everything.

The Dark 2 sends Cain, his sharp tongued ex wife, her outspoken mother, and a kind Amish woman across a ravaged Tennessee landscape. They are trying to rescue two kidnapped children from rebel soldiers, but between them and their goal lie twisted remnants of the old world, roaming monsters, and human predators who have learned to thrive in chaos.

The Dark 3 raises the stakes again. The group is split, each member facing their own trials among bloodthirsty creatures and brutal survivors. Cain focuses on one goal, breaking into an enemy held army base to free his daughter, even if it means going up against an army with little more than stubbornness and a rifle.

While the series leans hard into survival horror, it also carries the author’s recurring interest in found family and redemption. Cain is not a polished hero. He is a damaged man trying to do one decent thing in a world that rewards cruelty, and that struggle gives the violence and monsters real weight.

Readers who like their dystopian fiction with relentless tension, brutal choices, and a reluctant but determined lead will find The Dark trilogy best tackled in order, starting with The Dark 1 and reading straight through.
