Series background & context

In Date with Death, Delilah Metcalfe is trying to keep her Dales Dating Agency afloat in Bruncliffe, a fictional Yorkshire Dales market town, when Samson O'Brien comes home in disgrace and rents office space to open the Dales Detective Agency. They are neighbors, rivals and reluctant allies before they become anything else. That push-pull energy drives the whole series as much as the murder plots do.

Bruncliffe is small, stubborn and never short of opinion.

The setting matters a lot here. These books are full of hills, farms, auction marts, village streets, pubs, retirement homes and dry-stone-walled roads, and the landscape shapes the stories. People in Bruncliffe watch each other closely. Family history, school memories, farming ties and old feuds all have weight. When something goes wrong, whether it is a suspicious death, a disappearance or a lie that starts to spread, the effects move quickly through the whole town.

Each book brings a fresh case, but the series has an ongoing backbone. Samson is trying to rebuild his life and clear the shadow hanging over his police career. Delilah is fiercely attached to home, protective of the people she loves and much better at local knowledge than she first lets on. Together they solve crimes that start small and turn complicated, from questions around supposed suicides and missing paperwork to poisonings, blackmail, rustling and murder. The mysteries are carefully laid out, but the books never forget the messier parts of real life, money troubles, family rows, loneliness and pride.

Tolpuddle, Delilah's dog, is part of the appeal too.

Tonally, the series sits comfortably in cosy crime, but it does not feel flimsy. There is wit, romance, community gossip and plenty of tea, yet the stakes are real and the danger can get close to home. Supporting characters return often, so Bruncliffe begins to feel like a place you know, with its gossips, farmers, local grandees and people who are kinder than they first appear. By the later books, the town's shared memory becomes one of the series' biggest strengths. Everything connects.

If you like murder mysteries where place matters as much as plot, The Dales Detective books are built for that mood. They balance village warmth with sharp secrets, and they let the relationship between Samson and Delilah unfold gradually across the series. Start at Date with Death and you'll see why readers stay for both the crimes and the company.
