Author bio

Brenda Chapman grew up in Terrace Bay, Ontario, a small town on the north shore of Lake Superior, and books were part of her life early. Family trips to the library made her a hungry reader, especially of mysteries, and she was the kind of kid who made up stories for her dolls and kept writing long after homework was done. By high school, she was filling pages with poems and learning that the habit of writing had already become part of who she was.

Writing was there early, even when she was not yet sure it could become a life.

She was accepted into Carleton University's journalism program, but chose to study English literature at Lakehead University instead. A creative writing course helped her see that all those years of reading had quietly taught her how stories work. After Lakehead, she earned a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University, moved to Ottawa, and spent about fifteen years teaching special education, reading, and language arts.

Later, wanting the second half of her working life to look different, she shifted into government communications work. She wrote and edited for federal departments, but kept returning to fiction after hours. In 2001, one of her short stories was accepted by Canadian Living, and the editor's enthusiastic phone call gave her something every writer needs at least once, clear proof that the work was connecting with somebody on the other side.

That was the push she needed.

Her first novel, Running Scared, arrived in 2004. It launched the Jennifer Bannon books for younger readers, followed by Hiding in Hawk's Creek, Where Trouble Leads, and Trail of Secrets. Those novels mix suspense with real family stress, friendship problems, and strong Canadian settings, which is part of why they still feel approachable. Chapman has a knack for putting ordinary young people into frightening situations without losing sight of the everyday pressures around them.

She moved into adult crime fiction with In Winter's Grip, then found a bigger canvas with Cold Mourning, the first Stonechild and Rouleau novel. That series, which includes Butterfly Kills and Closing Time, follows Kala Stonechild and Jacques Rouleau through police work that is as much about damaged families and old loyalties as it is about solving a case. Readers who like procedurals tend to respond to Chapman's balance of solid investigation, sharp pacing, and characters who carry their histories into every room.

She also wrote the Anna Sweet novellas, including My Sister's Keeper and The Hard Fall, which deliver compact mysteries with an ex-cop turned private investigator at the center. More recently, the Hunter and Tate books, starting with Blind Date and continuing through When Last Seen, Fatal Harvest, and Who Lies in Wait, bring in a new pairing, Detective Liam Hunter and true crime podcaster Ella Tate. Across all of these books, Chapman returns to some familiar ground, family secrets, people trying to outrun the past, and the uneasy way danger can grow inside everyday communities.

Her work has been shortlisted many times, including five Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence, and she has served two terms as president of Capital Crime Writers. These days she writes full-time and lives in Ottawa. After all these books, she still seems most at home where mystery, place, and human complication meet.
