Series background & context

The Boys of RDA is Megan Matthews's connected contemporary romance series set around San Francisco. It begins with Rush, as recent graduate Aspen Adams moves to the city with a new job, an apartment, and a careful five-year plan. The plan gets harder to follow when she meets Finnegan McRyan, the helpful and appealing neighbor who seems almost too good to be true.

The city is part of the fun here. Apartments, jobs, friendships, vacation escapes, and roommate rules create the everyday pressure around each love story. The books move through a close circle of friends and acquaintances, so familiar faces keep showing up while each couple gets a different problem to solve.

Technology and games are woven into the series through the RDA group and its successful gaming-world characters. But these are romances first. The professional lives give the characters things to argue about, protect, and occasionally misunderstand, while the emotional stakes come from trust, old breakups, and the fear that a good thing will not last.

In Lag, Simone Stevens meets gaming-company CEO Trey Good during a tropical break from New York, only to discover that their brief escape is not the end of the story. Grind moves back to the Bay Area, where Marissa Melrose clashes with soccer star and landlord Ryland Bates. Their attraction is immediate, but the rules attached to Marissa's apartment make matters far less simple.

The middle of the series also gives Grant Moore and Clare Cunningham a two-part arc. Beta captures their first encounter, while Quest follows Clare as she tries to keep a one-night connection from disrupting the stable life she has built. That pairing works best after the earlier books, since the friends and relationships around them are already in motion.

The final novel, Hack, turns up the suspense. Amanda Amrose witnesses a shooting and ends up sharing close quarters with Hudson, a former Navy SEAL assigned to protect her. Secrets, a bodyguard arrangement, and holiday timing make it a more danger-tinged finale.

Expect witty contemporary romance, friend-group overlap, ambitious people, and enough uncertainty to keep the couples from getting together too easily. Reading in order is the best way to catch the changing friendships and the callbacks between books.
