Series background & context
Pelican Bay Security is Megan Matthews's small-town romantic suspense series, set in coastal Maine. The books pair women trying to start over or protect a secret with former Navy SEALs and other security-minded men who know danger when they see it. The tone mixes real threats with humor, romance, and a tightly connected town.
It begins with Security Risk. Tabitha Thompson arrives in Pelican Bay hoping to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend, only to find that missing diamonds and men looking for them have followed her. Her neighbor, Ridge Jefferson, is a former Navy SEAL with the skills to help, but Tabitha has good reason to be wary of anyone trying to take control of her life.
Pelican Bay has a habit of making private trouble public. The locals know one another, the bakery friends are curious and loyal, and the security team steps in when danger reaches town. That community creates warmth, but it also means no one can disappear for long.
Each book introduces a new central couple while continuing the wider web of friends, family, and criminal threats. In Future Risk, bakery owner Anessa is caught up in stolen money and mob trouble. Holiday Risk brings a dead body into a new relationship, while Sweetest Risk follows a bed-and-breakfast manager whose mysterious guest may be more dangerous than he appears.
The middle books take the action beyond a simple hometown mystery. Quickest Risk strands a woman with a stranger carrying guns at a motel. Biggest Risk reunites a woman with Huxley Weiss, the former military man who once saved her. Lifetime Risk gives a single mother an unwelcome but persistent helper after he accidentally hits her with his truck, and Accidental Risk finds Stella and former SEAL Crispin facing danger arriving from the sea.
By Family Risk and Safety Risk, secrets, shootings, mob connections, and false identities have made the town's security work even more personal. The series does not ask its heroines to sit back and wait to be saved. They make mistakes, push back, and decide for themselves who deserves their trust.
Start with Security Risk. The romances can often be enjoyed as individual stories, but publication order gives the best sense of Pelican Bay's friendships, running jokes, and the way one couple's trouble can become everyone else's concern.
