The Borden Dispatches Books in Order

The Borden Dispatches takes the real-life Lizzie Borden case and sends it somewhere much stranger. In Cherie Priest's version, Lizzie was acquitted of killing her father and stepmother, but the violence at the Borden home was not a simple family crime. Something old and hungry had already found its way into Fall River.

Maplecroft begins after the trial, with Lizzie and her sister Emma living in a house near the Massachusetts coast. They are still watched, judged, and treated as a public spectacle. But their bigger problem is the presence that infected their parents, an evil tied to the sea that brings nightmares, madness, and monstrous change. Lizzie is not presented as a passive figure in this retelling. She is practical, frightened, furious, and willing to pick up an axe when necessary.

The series uses letters, diary entries, reports, and other documents to build its world. That structure makes the horror feel close and personal. Readers see how fear works its way through families and towns, and how difficult it is to explain the impossible when everyone already thinks they know the worst thing about you.

The past does not stay in Fall River.

In Chapelwood, Lizzie follows the threat to Birmingham, Alabama. There, a brutal hatchet murderer, a hostile town, and a church gathering around an unholy belief all point toward the same wider danger. The book keeps the cosmic horror but expands the stakes, showing that the force Lizzie faced at home has roots far beyond one house or one family.

These are gothic horror novels first, even when the historical setup is doing a lot of work. The atmosphere is tense and often grim. Priest is interested in the pressures around Lizzie and Emma, including public blame, family loyalty, sexism, and the way a town can choose cruelty because it is easier than looking closely at itself.

Start with Maplecroft. It lays out the Borden sisters' version of events and establishes the central threat. Then continue directly to Chapelwood, which works best once you understand what Lizzie has already survived. Expect historical horror, sea-born nightmares, and an axe used for much more than its famous rhyme.
