The Best Men

by Sarina Bowen

2022

Mark and Asher clash while planning a wedding, then get stuck in close quarters in Miami. What starts as banter and a no-strings deal turns into something much harder to walk away from.

Series background & context

The Best Men is a small M/M romance setup with a very built-in engine: a wedding. Mark Banks is the protective older brother who is already uneasy about how fast his sister's relationship is moving. Asher St. James is the polished, charming wingman attached to the groom's side of the equation. They do not begin from neutral. They begin from irritation, attraction, and the deep suspicion that the other man is going to be a problem.

He is.

The series shape is simple and smart. Super Hot Wingman works as the prelude, showing the first jolt of chemistry and the drunken-text embarrassment that lights the fuse. The Best Men then opens that premise up into a full story, with wedding planning, shared space, destination chaos, and the slow collapse of every rule these two thought they had under control.

What makes it work is the contrast between the surface gloss and the emotional mess underneath. On the surface, this is all tuxes, guest lists, vacation heat, and the sort of romantic setup that almost dares the characters not to hook up. But Mark is carrying fear from his own past, and Asher has more going on than effortless charisma. The books know that two men can be funny together and still be genuinely scared of wanting something lasting.

The tone is bright, flirty, and very readable. There is plenty of sharp dialogue and plenty of heat, but the series never treats the emotions like an afterthought. It understands that weddings have a way of dragging every unresolved feeling into the light.

If you want a short collaboration that feels a little glossier than Bowen's hockey books but still lands its feelings, The Best Men is a good pick. It is polished rom-com on the outside, but there is a real heart under the tailored jacket.
