2018

This omnibus collects The Archived and The Unbound, following Mackenzie Bishop as she guards a library of the dead and digs into its secrets. It is a moody blend of paranormal mystery, grief, romance, and dangerous hidden rules.

Series background & context

The Archived books take one of Schwab's most memorable ideas and run with it: the dead rest on shelves like books, each life preserved as a History inside the Archive. Mackenzie Bishop, usually called Mac, is one of the Keepers charged with returning Histories when they wake and wander. It is a job built on rules, secrecy, and the understanding that if the dead cross into the living world, things can go very wrong.

It is part ghost story, part mystery, part grief novel.

Mac is a teenager, but the work is not symbolic or ceremonial. She really has to chase dangerous Histories through the Narrows, the space between the Archive and the living world, and send them back where they belong. At the same time, she is dealing with ordinary life, new school routines, a family that does not know the full truth, and losses that still shape how she sees everything around her.

The setting does a lot of heavy lifting here. Hotels, hallways, locked doors, old keys, and quiet rooms all matter. So does the feeling that institutions built to protect people are often keeping secrets of their own. In The Archived, Mac gets pulled into a conspiracy inside the Archive itself. In The Unbound, the pressure gets more personal as nightmares, disappearances, and suspicion start closing in around her.

This series likes hidden passageways, but it also likes emotional fallout.

If you want a big cast and constant battle scenes, this is not really that kind of fantasy. The tension comes from atmosphere, unanswered questions, and Mac's stubborn refusal to stop digging when adults tell her to leave things alone. Wesley Ayers adds wit and charm, but the heart of the story is Mac herself, trying to carry grief, fear, and responsibility all at once.

The Dark Vault later collected the duology in one volume, which makes it an easy way to read the whole story in order. If you like paranormal fiction with a gothic mood and a strong mystery spine, this is one of Schwab's most inviting worlds.
