3

Bridge of Souls

by Victoria VE Schwab

2021

New Orleans should be just another haunted stop for Cass and her ghost best friend, Jacob. Instead, she runs into a far older and darker force, one tied to death itself and powerful enough to drag her past the Veil for good.

Series background & context

The Cassidy Blake books start with a simple change that throws everything off balance. Cass almost drowned, and ever since, she has been able to pull back the Veil between the living and the dead. Her best friend Jacob is a ghost, which tells you pretty quickly that this series is not interested in keeping the supernatural at a safe distance.

Ghosts are part of everyday life here, even when Cass wishes they were not.

What makes the series especially fun is the travel setup. Cass's parents are authors who turn into TV hosts, filming a show about the world's most haunted cities, so each book drops her into a new place with its own legends, cemeteries, tunnels, and restless spirits. Edinburgh gives the series its first deep shiver. Paris brings the catacombs. New Orleans adds music, tombs, and a much heavier sense of what the dead can want.

Across the trilogy, Cass is learning her own rules as she goes. She can cross the Veil, but that does not mean she understands it. Her gift is useful, but it also makes her visible to things that would rather not stay buried. As the books go on, the dangers get stronger and more personal, and Cass has to figure out who to trust, how brave she really is, and what Jacob means to her beyond being the funny ghost at her side.

The scares are real, but so is the warmth.

These are middle grade books, yet they never talk down to the reader. They balance creepy scenes with humor, family chaos, and a friendship at the center that gives the series its heart. Jacob is not just comic relief. Cass's parents are not just background noise. The result is a ghost story that feels adventurous and grounded at the same time.

If you want haunted settings, quick pacing, and just enough lore to keep things interesting without getting too dense, Cassidy Blake is a great entry point. Each book has its own mystery, but the real pull is watching Cass grow more capable, and more cautious, every time she steps through the Veil.
