Author bio

Victoria V.E. Schwab was born in California and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. She studied book design at Washington University in St. Louis, then went on to the University of Edinburgh for a master's degree focused on depictions of monstrosity in medieval art. That mix of design, folklore, history, and monsters makes a lot of sense once you see the kinds of worlds she likes to build.

She has said she always loved telling stories, whether in poems, short fiction, or scripts, but for a long time she did not think she could write a novel. The turning point came in college, when she realized the real problem was not a lack of ideas but fear of failing. So she sat down and wrote one anyway. By her own account, that first novel was terrible, but it taught her something important, she could do it, and once she learned that, she did not stop.

That mix of fear and momentum still feels baked into her books.

Her published debut, The Near Witch, arrived in 2011 and already showed her interest in rumor, old stories, and the uneasy edge where the ordinary world slips into something stranger. From there, her range opened up quickly. She wrote the eerie Archive books, middle grade adventures like City of Ghosts, and darker, sharper stories like Vicious, where superpowers make people more dangerous instead of more noble. She has also written across middle grade, young adult, and adult shelves without treating those categories like hard borders.

A lot of readers first meet her through A Darker Shade of Magic, with its parallel Londons, ambitious thieves, and magic that always seems to come with a cost. Others come in through The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, which takes a quieter path and asks what it means to be forgotten, remembered, and changed by time. Books like Gallant, The Archived, and This Savage Song show another side of her work, one that leans into haunted houses, hidden systems, uneasy cities, and young people trying to decide what kind of person they can live with being. Readers tend to return for the atmosphere, the clean forward motion, and the characters who are never quite as simple as they first appear.

Schwab likes borders, hero and villain, life and death, magic and reality.

You can feel that in nearly everything she writes. Her stories are full of ghosts, bargains, hidden doors, restless dead, and monsters born from human choices. But the emotional core is usually very human: grief, loneliness, obsession, belonging, ambition, and the wish to remake yourself into someone stronger. Even when the settings are huge, the questions stay close to the bone. What do we owe each other? What does power reveal? What happens when getting what you want costs more than you expected?

She has also said she has never been very interested in strict audience labels, and her career backs that up. She has written more than twenty-five books, and the younger titles and the adult ones still feel connected by the same instinct, to make the world feel just strange enough that you start to doubt where the real boundary is.

These days, she splits her time between Denver, Colorado, and Edinburgh, Scotland. Alongside the novels, she hosts the podcast No Write Way. Her official bio also mentions running, cycling, swimming, and life with her cats, Thomas and Chauncey, and her dog, Riley. It is a grounded picture of a writer whose books are often full of the impossible, which somehow feels exactly right.
