Sword of Justice

by Ryan Rimmel

2025

When Yorick moves into his grandfather’s house and uncovers a magical sword, he is hurled into Exigen, a fantasy realm in crisis. To save the kingdom and its princess, he must bond with the sword Justice, level fast, and survive monsters and tentacled horrors.

Series background & context

The Adventures of Squire Yorick shifts Rimmel’s game inspired storytelling into classic portal fantasy territory. Yorick is a young man who moves into his grandfather’s house, discovers a mysterious sword, and is yanked through a portal into a realm called Exigen.

In Sword of Justice that discovery turns him into a trainee Magical Sword Knight, one of a small group of warriors whose power comes from their bond with an enchanted weapon. Yorick suddenly has to learn how to level up, pick abilities, and survive encounters with monsters, all while figuring out what his very opinionated sword Justice actually wants from him. The fate of a besieged kingdom quickly ends up on his shoulders.

The series leans into fish out of water comedy. Yorick knows games and stories, but Exigen is not interested in following neat genre rules, and his modern instincts do not always match what a chivalric fantasy world expects. Tentacled horrors, political plots, and culture shock keep him off balance as he tries to live up to the title of Squire and, eventually, something more.

What keeps things moving is the back and forth between Yorick and Justice, a partnership where the sword has just as much to say about tactics, style, and who deserves a good smiting.

The Monster Army expands the canvas by summoning Yorick, Justice, and his somewhat ridiculous steed Gringer to the world of Kultai. There, a magical conjunction has gone wrong, a literal army of monsters is threatening the planet, and an ancient enemy is starting to rise again. Yorick has to push his build harder than ever, learning new skills and teaming up with a local monster hunter named Izzy to keep Kultai from being overrun.

As a whole the series offers action heavy, isekai flavored LitRPG with a focus on a single protagonist who keeps getting bounced to new worlds that need saving. If you like sarcastic magic items, training arcs, and stakes that grow with every book, The Adventures of Squire Yorick is meant to be read straight through from Sword of Justice into The Monster Army and beyond.
