Author bio
Tessa Dawn grew up in Colorado, and the Rockies clearly stayed with her. Their scale, isolation, and rough beauty echo through much of her fiction, especially the hidden valleys, mountain strongholds, and dangerous landscapes that frame her supernatural worlds.
She started writing young, very young. Dawn has said she finished her first full-length novel at eleven, and by the time she graduated from high school she had already filled a banker's box with stories and novels.
This was not a late turn.
Before fiction became her public career, she studied psychology and spent several years working in criminal justice and mental health. Later she returned to school for a master's degree in nonprofit management. Along the way she also wrote poetry, greeting cards, academic curricula, and workbooks for children with autism.
That background helps explain something about her books. For all the vampires, dragons, and ancient curses, her stories stay interested in fear, trauma, loyalty, grief, and the messy ways people try to survive one another.
Her best known work began with Blood Destiny in 2010, the novel that opened the Blood Curse series. From there she built a long-running world around cursed vampire bloodlines, human destinies chosen by the gods, and the isolated Colorado setting of Dark Moon Vale. Books like Blood Awakening, Blood Shadows, and Blood Father each focus on a different central couple, but the larger family history and the old curse keep pushing the series forward.
She likes dark fantasy with a big myth engine behind it.
That same instinct shows up in her dragon books. Dragons Realm moves into a harsher secondary world shaped by monarchy, prophecy, slavery, and fire. Zanaikeyros and Ghostaniaz: Son of Dragons lean into immortal dragon warriors, fated mates, and ticking deadlines, while still making room for bruised characters who have to choose what kind of people they want to be. Even when the setting changes, she tends to return to the same big questions: how much the past owns the present, what people owe family, and whether love can survive power, duty, and damage.
Her protagonists also have a clear pattern. The men are often kings, warriors, trackers, healers, or outcasts, dangerous people living under old laws and carrying more guilt than they know what to do with. The women are not there to stand politely in the background. They challenge the rules, complicate the power balance, and force the story to open into something bigger than a straight romance plot. That mix is a large part of why readers who like her work tend to stay with her for whole series, not just single books.
The audience has grown steadily. Dawn's official biography notes readers in more than 100 countries, along with repeated bestseller placements across fantasy, horror, and paranormal categories. Those facts matter, but they also fit what the books already suggest: she writes for readers who want emotion, lore, danger, and commitment to a fully built world.
And she has kept at it.
Her official bio says she splits her time between the Colorado suburbs and the mountains with her two children and one very energetic cat. She has also shared that she would love to live farther out in the country someday, with horses and a German shepherd. It is an easy image to connect back to the work, a writer drawn to wild spaces, stubborn survivors, and stories where the dark never quite swallows the light.
Writing started early for Dawn, and it seems to have remained the through line.
