Series background & context

Tears of Blood is Forbes's darker epic fantasy line, and it starts in a world that has already been broken. A nameless, ageless tyrant has ruled for a thousand years, crushed history, enslaved the living, and hunted those born with magic. In this world magic is treated like a curse, feared by ordinary people and pursued by the Empire with ruthless force.

Eryn is one of the cursed.

She is one of the two big emotional anchors of the series. The other is Silas, a deadly fugitive with a wrecked memory and a past tied to the very system now hunting her. When their paths cross, the books settle into a strong duo structure: a young girl trying to survive powers that make her a target, and a damaged warrior trying to understand what he used to be. Around them, the series slowly opens up into a larger story about lost history, old machinery, the true nature of magic, and the secrets holding the Empire together.

There is a good journey feel to these books. The characters move through dangerous roads, haunted places, and myth-heavy landscapes that seem built to swallow the unprepared. The Dark, the Refinery, the hunt by General Spyne, and the search for a cure all give the series a sense of travel through layers of danger and revelation. Forbes keeps the world readable by focusing on what Eryn and Silas need next, even when the background mythology gets bigger.

Tone-wise, Tears of Blood sits between grim fantasy and coming-of-age adventure. It has monsters, ruin, tyrants, and real cruelty, but it also cares about loyalty, stubborn hope, and the idea that history can be stolen and still found again. The books feel older and more fairy-tale-dark than Forbes's science fiction without becoming ornate.

If you want the fantasy series in this catalog that most clearly aims for broken empires, hidden truth, and dangerous magic, this is the one. It is driven by character, but the world around those characters keeps getting wider, stranger, and more tragic in a way that suits the title very well.
