Author bio
Tao Wong was born in Malaysia and now lives in Toronto, Canada. He writes science fiction and fantasy, especially LitRPG, progression fantasy, and cultivation stories. A lot of readers first meet him through The System Apocalypse or A Thousand Li, but his catalog goes well beyond those two series.
He likes systems.
Before fiction became his public career, Wong spent years working in marketing, and that background later fed into his nonfiction book Marketing Strategy for Authors. You can feel some of that practical mindset in his novels too. His worlds usually have rules, trade-offs, and consequences, and his characters often succeed because they pay attention, adapt fast, and keep working when things get messy.
He also brings his other interests with him. Wong has said he enjoys martial arts, reading, and dreaming up new worlds, and that combination shows up all over his fiction. Training matters in his books. Repetition matters. Small gains matter.
He started publishing novels in 2017, with A Healer's Gift opening the Adventures on Brad series and Life in the North launching The System Apocalypse. Those early books helped establish the lane he is still best known for, fantasy and science fiction stories where game-like structures reshape everyday life, survival, and power.
Then he kept going.
Over time, Wong expanded in several directions at once. A Thousand Li follows Wu Ying from village life into the long, patient climb of cultivation. Hidden Wishes takes a lighter urban fantasy route, with magic arriving through a jinn's ring. Hidden Dishes slows everything down on purpose, using a hidden Toronto restaurant and supernatural guests to build a cozy fantasy around food, routine, and change. Even when the setting shifts, the through line stays familiar: people learning how a world works, then figuring out what it costs to live in it.
Readers who stick with Wong usually come for that steady sense of progression. His heroes are often capable, but they are rarely given easy wins. John Lee in The System Apocalypse has to turn raw survival into leadership. Wu Ying in A Thousand Li learns that power does not free anyone from duty, grief, or politics. Daniel Chai in Adventures on Brad brings a healer's instincts into a dungeon world that often rewards force first and reflection later.
His work has spread well beyond a single niche. The books have appeared in audiobook, paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats, and several have been translated into other languages. A Thousand Li: The Second Sect made the 2021 UK Kindle Storyteller Award shortlist, and in 2026 the first three A Thousand Li books were set for hardcover republication by Ace.
These days, Wong is still based in Toronto and still moving between big series, side stories, and new experiments. That range is part of the appeal. You can start with apocalypse survival, a cultivation journey, a dungeon-town healer, or a hidden restaurant, and it still feels like the work of the same writer, someone interested in how people adapt when the rules of the world suddenly change.
