by Nathan Lowell

2010

After twenty winters on the road gathering herb lore, Tanyth Fairport stops in the struggling village of Ravenwood for what should be one last winter. Series background & context

The Tanyth Fairport adventures move completely away from starships and trade fleets and into a secondary-world fantasy rooted in herbs, folklore, and the slow work of healing. Set on the world of Korlay, the series follows Tanyth Fairport, an older itinerant herbalist who has spent twenty winters walking from village to village collecting plant lore.

In Ravenwood, Tanyth is on what she thinks will be her final pilgrimage before settling down to write her life's work. She stops in a struggling hamlet tucked into the trees and finds a place beset by highwaymen, fear, and bad harvests. What begins as a simple offer to help with herbs turns into a season of hard choices as she discovers that the stories she has heard about witch women and old powers might be closer to the truth than she ever imagined.

Zypheria's Call carries Tanyth across the ocean as she continues her search for the hermit of Lammas Wood, the legendary last of the Old Witch Women. Storms and ice make the physical journey dangerous, but the real difficulty lies in people and politics. Tanyth finds herself facing enemies she has never met, while strange changes within her own mind and senses make her wonder if she is losing her grip on reality.

In The Hermit of Lammas Wood, the long journey finally brings her into the deep forest and into the orbit of the figure she has sought for two decades. The hermit is not what she expected, and neither is the threat. Greedy businessmen from the mainland see the wood and its people as resources to be stripped, and Tanyth has to decide how much of herself she is willing to risk to protect those she has come to love.

Throughout the series, Lowell blends practical herbcraft, cooking, and village routine with an emerging sense of magic that feels old rather than flashy. Tanyth is not a chosen teenager but a tired traveler with a lifetime of experience, and her growth comes as much from accepting who she already is as from discovering new abilities.

Readers who appreciate the quiet, work-focused side of the Solar Clipper stories will find the same attention to daily life here, filtered through a setting of dirt roads, cold winters, and the kind of wisdom that only comes from walking a long way on foot.
