Hard Knocks

by Nathan Lowell

2023

Far from any port, the Marva Collins runs into serious trouble that leaves Ishmael and his mixed crew of professionals and cadets with hard choices and thin options. With home a long way off and information scarce, every course change feels like a roll of the dice in the Deep Dark.

Series background & context

The SC Marva Collins series brings Ishmael Wang back to center stage, but in a new role. Instead of climbing the ladder himself, he is now responsible for helping the next generation of merchant officers learn how to live and work in the Deep Dark.

The premise begins when Manchester Yards donates a new training vessel to the Merchant Officer Academy at Port Newmar. In School Days, academy leader Alys Giggone looks at the ship and remembers the Chernyakova and the crew who once ran her into some of the roughest parts of space. She calls on Ishmael and his people to take a group of cadets out beyond the easy routes, so they can learn what textbooks and simulators cannot teach.

Mixing a professional crew with students turns out to be more complicated than anyone expected. The Marva Collins has to function as a working ship and a classroom, and every drill or port call carries extra weight when impressionable cadets are watching. Sorting out who teaches what, who learns which lesson, and how to keep everyone safe is the core tension of the first book.

In Working Class, Ishmael takes a brand-new crew of cadets into Toe-Hold space, where even experienced spacers have to keep their wits about them. The story alternates between the line crew's practical challenges and the perspective of an academy liaison who is slowly realizing how dangerous it can be to apply the wrong theory to the wrong students. Green hands can turn small mistakes into big emergencies very quickly.

Hard Knocks pushes the idea even further. When the Marva Collins runs into serious trouble far from any port, Ishmael and his mixed crew of pros and trainees have to navigate a long, uncertain trip home with incomplete information and limited options. The title is literal and figurative; some lessons can only be learned the hard way.

This series is a natural follow up for readers who loved the Trader and Seeker books and want to see how the culture Ishmael helped build gets passed on. It combines the familiar rhythms of Lowell's merchant ships with the added chaos of students, making for stories that are part adventure, part teaching practicum, and part reflection on what it means to hand off a legacy.
