Author bio

Nathan Lowell was born in 1952 in Portland, Maine, and grew up along the state's southern coast, where fishing boats and fog banks were part of everyday life.

He spent his childhood in a small rural community, absorbing stories from the docks and developing the deep maritime roots that later shaped his spacefaring fiction.

In the early 1970s he served in the United States Coast Guard, standing watch on a cutter riding hurricane patrol in the North Atlantic and working at a communications station in Kodiak, Alaska. Long stretches at sea, shipboard routines, and the quiet rhythm of watches gave him a feel for how real crews work together under pressure.

After leaving active duty, Lowell went back to school. He earned a BS in business administration, followed by an MA and a PhD in educational technology with specializations in distance education and instructional design. For years he combined careers in education and technology with a private writing habit, thinking hard about how people learn and how systems shape ordinary lives.

His first taste of publication came early, when a poem he wrote in elementary school appeared in print. Through decades of starts and stops he kept telling himself stories, even when he set science fiction aside for a while and focused on work and family.

The shift from private drafts to public audio was a turning point.

Lowell began recording his own novels chapter by chapter and releasing them as free audio, building an audience of listeners one commute at a time.

Those recordings became the foundation of the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper universe, starting with Quarter Share and continuing through Half Share, Full Share, Double Share, Captain's Share, and Owner's Share. The books follow young Ishmael Horatio Wang from greenhand to captain, focusing less on space battles and more on coffee, cargo, and the small, human decisions that keep a merchant ship running.

Drawing on his maritime background, Lowell bases his starships on real nautical practice, from watch schedules and safety drills to how a cook organizes a galley. His podcast versions of the Trader Tales were finalists for major audio awards several times, and Captain's Share and Owner's Share each earned a Parsec Award for long-form speculative fiction.

Over time he has expanded the Solar Clipper setting with Seeker's Tales, Smuggler's Tales, Shaman's Tales, Tales From the Deep Dark, and the SC Marva Collins training-ship stories, exploring the same universe from different corners and points of view. Beyond space opera he has written the Tanyth Fairport adventures on the world of Korlay, the contemporary fantasy The Wizard's Butler, and the epic collaboration Salt.

He now lives on the open plains east of the Rocky Mountains, where the horizon feels as wide as the Deep Dark. There he writes, walks, and keeps building new stories about work, community, and finding your place in a very large universe.
