Tales of the Djinn Books in Order

Tales of the Djinn is Emma Holly in full fantasy-adventure mode. These books move between modern New York and a hidden magical world where djinn, angels, ifrits, and other powerful beings are locked in old rivalries. The setup has a fairy-tale feel, but it also has mystery, danger, and the kind of emotional tangle Holly liked best, where love is never simple and desire changes the stakes.

The series opens with The Guardian, where Elyse, a grieving New York landlady, rents to a stranger who turns out to be Arcadius, a djinn commander trying to save his people from a curse. From there The Double pushes the story deeper into the genie world. Elyse is no passive bystander. She gets pulled into the politics, the magic, and the dangerous question of who Arcadius really is, especially when a second version of him complicates everything.

Then the focus shifts. The Angel, The City of Endless Night, and Sultan's Choice follow Georgie, her angel lover Connor, and Sultan Iksander. Those books form one connected arc, and they lean into a bigger, more sweeping kind of story. Georgie starts out thinking she understands her strange life, only to learn that the truth is much larger and far less comfortable. Connor brings the celestial side of the world, while Iksander brings royal duty, grief, pride, and a lot of tension. Their relationship is a big part of the appeal.

The final listed book here, The Lady Detective, turns toward Yasmin and Joseph. Yasmin is a former sultan's wife with the handy ability to become a cat, and Joseph is the magician she can never quite forget. That gives the series a nice late change of pace. The danger is still there, but the story also plays with secrecy, investigation, and the long aftereffects of old palace rules.

What holds the whole thing together is the setting. Holly treats the genie realm like a place with its own history, class tensions, customs, and wounds. Magic carpets, shape-changing, heavenly politics, and forbidden attraction all matter, but so do questions of belonging and freedom. People are constantly crossing borders, between worlds, between species, and between the lives they were assigned and the lives they actually want.

The tone is adventurous, sensual, and a little grand in the best way. If you like portal fantasy, hidden realms, and romances that take their time building a magical cast around the central couple or triad, this is a very fun corner of Holly's work to explore. Read it in order if you can. The relationships and the world both get richer as the books stack up.
