Into the Dark

This collection combines three supernatural romances with a series guide: a guardian and goddess battle demons, a captive vampire encounters an invisible Amazon, and rival deities confront desire amid the reversal of their captor-and-prisoner roles.

Series background & context

Gena Showalter's Atlantis romances imagine a hidden world populated by beings from myth. Humans who enter it encounter rules and dangers they did not know existed, while its inhabitants face choices that their established duties have not prepared them to make. The series moves among different couples rather than keeping one heroine at its center. Its shared setting brings dragons, vampires and other supernatural beings into adult romances where attraction often conflicts with loyalty, freedom or a mission.

Heart of the Dragon begins with Grace Carlyle searching for her missing brother. Instead of a familiar answer, she finds herself within Atlantis and in the power of Darius en Kragin. Darius belongs to a race of shapeshifting warriors charged with guarding the gates and killing outsiders who cross them. Grace's arrival therefore presents more than an unexpected visitor. His interest in her threatens to put a centuries-old obligation against a new personal attachment, while she must navigate a world that can treat her presence as a crime.

An outsider's arrival can change the meaning of duty.

Jewel of Atlantis introduces Grayson James, a human agent sent to keep the Jewel of Dunamis away from dangerous hands or destroy it. The name sounds like an object, but Jewel is a woman, part goddess and part prophet. Discovering that fact changes the moral shape of his assignment. Jewel wants freedom, while Gray needs her knowledge to find his way through Atlantis. The relationship begins with overlapping needs, making cooperation essential before either can be sure where their connection will lead.

The sequence continues with The Nymph King and The Vampire's Bride, while The Amazon's Curse adds a shorter story within the same setting. The titles signal the range of supernatural characters whose relationships come into focus. Atlantis supplies continuity, but each romance opens a different encounter inside it. Readers can expect the hidden world's dangers and competing interests to influence the couple, rather than serving only as a backdrop for attraction. Moving between protagonists allows the series to show several sides of that world.

These books combine adult romance with discoveries, threats and decisions about whether an inherited role deserves obedience. Grace's search for her brother and Gray's official assignment begin as practical goals, then become more complicated when a person matters more than the assumptions behind the task. Start with Heart of the Dragon, followed by Jewel of Atlantis, The Nymph King and The Vampire's Bride. That path introduces Atlantis through successive couples, with the shorter story offering another part of the shared romantic world.
