Series background & context

No Monsters Like Hers is a portal fantasy romance series following Moriah Shaker through a world where justice is distorted and survival requires unlikely alliances. Gena Showalter begins with a recognizable interruption to ordinary life: a young woman seeks shelter from a storm. The shelter becomes a passage into Hakeldama, a realm filled with dangerous creatures and powerful people who can escape the consequences of their actions. Moriah wants to get home, but every attempt to understand the place draws her more deeply into its conflicts.

In The Great and Terrible, twenty-year-old Moriah is a college dropout with no preparation for the world waiting beyond an empty chapel. She soon finds herself threatened by a system in which innocent people can pay for crimes committed by others. Her best hope appears to be the City of Lux, rumored to contain a way between worlds. That goal gives the opening book the shape of a dangerous journey, with the road offering few guarantees about who can be trusted or what will be demanded next.

The companions she gathers are far from a conventional rescue party.

A hustler, a disgraced former mayor, and a growing beast-dog join the story, while the executioner Jasher poses a more complicated problem. He is frighteningly capable, hides a monstrous secret, and has a past connected to Moriah’s in ways neither fully understands. The opening premise echoes the journey structure of Oz, but fills it with lethal poppies, monsters, and the threat of execution. Attraction becomes another uncertainty because the person drawing Moriah closer belongs to the same brutal world she wants to escape.

The Ember and the Emerald expands the story through a return to the past. Moriah has a chance to alter the loss that shaped her life, but doing so requires facing Hakeldama again. Her relationship with Jasher becomes still more dangerous as magic changes the terms on which they can recognize and help each other. A mysterious journal and a lost gemstone become part of the search for answers. The possibility of changing time turns the desire to go home into a harder question about which version of the past she is willing to fight for.

Read The Great and Terrible before The Ember and the Emerald, followed by The Light and the Ruin. The sequence follows one heroine through developing mysteries, transformations, and choices, rather than presenting separate couples in each volume. The tone is dark fantasy romance, combining perilous travel with questions about fate and identity. Moriah’s wish to protect the people she loves gives the larger magical conflicts their emotional focus, while the world repeatedly challenges her understanding of what counts as a monster and whom she can safely call an ally.
