Series background & context

Book of Arden is a fantasy romance series about a young woman who discovers that her life has already become the subject of a mysterious book. Gena Showalter sets the story in Ourland, a place formed from broken pieces of two worlds. Modern life exists beside divine relics and the remains of fallen gods. Arden Roosa has grown up knowing that strange reality, but knowledge of her own world becomes less secure once she learns that someone may have recorded more about her than she understands herself.

Night brings a danger that shapes daily survival.

A strange madness can turn ordinary people into killers during the darkest hours. Twenty-year-old Arden tries to avoid that threat, until reading The Book of Arden changes her position entirely. In Kingdom of Tomorrow, she is forced into Fort Bala Royal Academy and paired with High Prince Cyrus Dolion. Training for combat places her beside someone ruthless and difficult to ignore. Her attraction to Cyrus develops within a setting where military preparation, personal vulnerability, and questions about an unknown enemy cannot easily be separated.

The academy is only one part of the mystery. Arden is also invited into the Tome Society, associated with an invisible library and books that predict the future. That possibility turns reading into something more dangerous than gathering information. If a text describes what has yet to happen, understanding it may alter how Arden sees her choices, her identity, and the people directing her life. Her panic attacks and demanding training remain immediate problems, but they now sit beside larger uncertainties about the gods and the shape of Ourland itself.

Kingdom of Today continues Arden’s story at the academy as forbidden prophecy and the threat of awakening powers become more urgent. Her relationship with Cyrus is part of the danger rather than an escape from it. Changes in him force her to consider how much she understands about the person she wants to protect. The series keeps its focus on a young woman trying to interpret the forces around her while making decisions whose consequences reach beyond the academy. Personal loyalty and a wider destiny can point in different directions, making certainty difficult to hold onto.

Begin with Kingdom of Tomorrow, then continue with Kingdom of Today before Kingdom of Yesterday. The books follow an ongoing heroine and developing mysteries, so their order matters. The tone combines a training-academy fantasy with dystopian danger, romantic tension, and questions about foreknowledge. Readers interested in hidden libraries and prophecies will find those elements tied closely to Arden’s struggle for agency. The central problem is whether learning that a future has been written gives someone power over it, or only a new reason to fear what comes next.
