Series background & context

Taken to the Stars is one of Rick Partlow's most openly adventurous series, but it still keeps his usual feel for pressure and combat. The books center on Charlie Travers, an ordinary man who gets pulled into an interstellar fight he never asked for and slowly becomes one of the people holding a rebellion together.

Charlie did not ask to lead anybody.

That reluctance is part of his charm. He is not the polished chosen hero type. He is a man forced to grow into the job because events do not leave him another option. Around him, the series builds out a larger cast, including allies like Laranna and Gib, and a steadily worsening conflict with the Anguilar Empire. What starts as survival turns into organized resistance, then into a long war with consequences for Earth itself.

The tone is big, brisk, and pulpy in the best sense. There are starships, fighters, empire-scale threats, hidden strongholds, and missions that should obviously be impossible. But the books stay readable because Charlie keeps the emotional center plain. He worries about his people, his friends, and what each new victory is going to cost.

Later volumes widen the battlefield considerably. Earth has to be defended. Old enemies come back. The rebellion stops playing pure defense and starts striking toward the heart of the empire. That lets the series move from accidental-adventure energy into full space-war momentum.

If you want Partlow working in a more rebellion-and-empire register, start with Taken to the Stars and keep going in order.
