Series background & context
Accidental Astronaut starts with one of the better Rick Partlow premises. The world needs a hero, but the wrong guy gets picked. Dr. Erik Manheim wants a warrior for a mission tied to ancient ruins and a recurring rogue-planet threat. Instead, he ends up with Jack Schafer, a hungover bush pilot who is absolutely not the man the plan called for.
That mismatch is the point.
Jack becomes the series engine because he is capable, stubborn, and very far outside the clean heroic mold. Once he gets dragged from Alaska into a crisis that reaches beyond Earth, the books lean into survival, discovery, and escalation. Ancient technology, alien worlds, wormholes, and fast-shifting alliances all start piling up, and Jack keeps getting pushed into situations where improvisation matters more than preparation.
The tone here is more openly adventurous than in some of Partlow's grimmer military series. There is still danger, and a lot of it, but there is also more of that pulpy what-is-behind-the-next-door energy. Jack is not commanding a platoon. He is trying to keep up with events that get bigger every time he thinks he understands them.
Later books widen the cast and the stakes, bringing in more developed relationships, stranger worlds, and the problem of what happens when humans start meddling with forces that have shaped whole civilizations. That makes the series a nice bridge between military SF and page-turning space adventure.
Start with Accidental Astronaut and read in order.
