Series background & context
Drop Trooper starts with a hard choice. Cam Alvarez is a poor kid from the Underground who can go to jail or go to war, and Rick Partlow wastes no time showing that neither option is gentle. Cam joins the Marines, becomes a drop trooper, and gets thrown into a war with the alien Tahni that is brutal, fast-moving, and deeply personal.
That is the hook. The thing that keeps the series moving is how Cam changes.
Early on, these books are about surviving training, earning a place in the platoon, and learning what it means to trust the people beside you when command sees you as expendable. The action is constant, but the emotional center is the unit. Cam's squad becomes his family, and that matters because Partlow is always interested in the distance between the people doing the fighting and the people ordering it.
As the series goes on, Drop Trooper gets bigger without losing that ground-level feel. Cam rises through the ranks. The war changes shape. Human politics, alien strategy, advanced AI, and older mysteries lurking behind the conflict all start to matter more. Later books push beyond straightforward invasion warfare into stranger territory, with lost technologies, shifting alliances, and a long, dangerous road that keeps getting farther from home.
The tone stays consistent even when the scope widens. These are military science fiction novels built around tactics, pressure, loyalty, and the cost of command. They have the rhythm of deployment stories and combat stories, but they also make room for recovery, displacement, and the uneasy business of trying to build something after a war should have ended.
If you like long-form military SF where the main character grows from scared recruit to seasoned leader, this is the series to read. Start with Contact Front and go in order. The later books hit harder when you have lived through the whole war with Cam.
